Kai Shu Calligraphy Class
The Regular Script style of Chinese calligraphy, also called 楷书 (Kai Shu), is the closest version to the Chinese characters that we write today. Regular script is one of the last major calligraphic styles to develop, emerging between the Chinese Han Dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period (200+AD), and maturing in the Tang Dynasty.
With Kai Shu, each stroke is placed slowly and carefully, the brush is lifted from the paper, and all the strokes are distinct from each other.
Quick Tip to Help You Choose the Right Class
While Kai Shu is usually studied first among the various calligraphic styles, at AJCC, we welcome students to start anywhere - Students can choose to start with our Kai Shu Class or our Xing Shu Class (Semi Cursive Script).
If you want to start out focusing on the form and structure of Chinese characters, try Kai Shu. If you are game to explore flow and movement of Chinese text, give our Xing Shu Class a go. Both classes will be offered on an ongoing basis, and you are welcomed to experience both on your calligraphy journey with us!

How Our Online Class Works
Our term comprises of 8 lessons, conducted online over Zoom on Saturday afternoons. Each lesson duration is 1 focused hour.
At each lesson, our calligraphy coach, Wan, will start off by - (1) introducing and sharing some context on the Chinese characters that we will write in that session. (2) Wan will then personally demonstrate the writing of the set characters and share tips for effective writing. (3) Students will then get to enjoy practising in smaller groups (in Zoom Breakout Rooms) and a coach will be assigned to each group to guide and provide real-time feedback. By the end of the term, each student will be guided to write a short, complete calligraphy piece!
