Xing Shu Calligraphy Class
The Semi-Cursive Script of Chinese calligraphy, also known as 行书 (Xing Shu), is a style of calligraphy which emerged in China during the Han Dynasty. The style is used to write Chinese characters and is abbreviated slightly where a character’s strokes are permitted to be visibly connected to each other as the writer writes, but not to the extent of the Cursive Script.
Xing Shu aims for an informal, natural movement from one stroke to the next. The calligrapher lifts the brush less often, with the intention of creating a softer and flowing style.
Quick Tip to Help You Choose the Right Class
While Kai Shu is usually studied first among the various calligraphic styles, at AJCC, we also welcome students to start with our Xing Shu Class (Semi-Cursive Script) if they wish to, and they will also be provided a firm foundation in calligraphy in this class.
And for intermediate students who have been attending our Xing Shu Classes in the past, you are welcomed to continue with our online Xing Shu Class or take an excursion into the Regular Script at our Kai Shu Class.
If you want to start out focusing on the form and structure of Chinese characters, try Kai Shu. If you are game to explore flow and movement of Chinese text, give Xing Shu a go. Both classes will be offered on an ongoing basis, and you are welcomed to experience both on your calligraphy journey with us!

How Our Online Class Works
Our term comprises of 8 lessons, conducted online over Zoom on Saturday afternoons. Each lesson duration is 1 focused hour.
At each lesson, our calligraphy coach, Wan, will start off by - (1) introducing and sharing some context on the Chinese characters that we will write in that session. (2) Wan will then personally demonstrate the writing of the set characters and share tips for effective writing. (3) Students will then get to enjoy practising in smaller groups (in Zoom Breakout Rooms) and a coach will be assigned to each group to guide and provide real-time feedback. By the end of the term, each student will be guided to write a short, complete calligraphy piece!
